Description
In varianta sa cea mai simpla, Mafia e un joc in care jucatorii se impart in doua tabere: cetateni cinstiti si mafioti. Fiecare din cele doua grupuri incearca sa castige jocul prin eliminarea celuilalt grup.
2. Roluri
Fiecare jucator primeste la inceputul jocului un rol, de partea cetatenilor sau de partea mafiei. Rolul poate fi unul simplu, "Mafiot" sau "Cetatean", sau unul cu puteri speciale, precum "Naş" sau "Politist". Puterile speciale se manifesta de obicei in faza de "noapte" a jocului.
Jucatorii cu roluri de partea cetatenilor nu cunosc la inceputul jocului rolurile celorlalti jucatori (cu rare exceptii), ei primind de la moderator informatii doar despre propriul rol.
Jucatorii cu roluri de partea mafiei primesc, alaturi de informatii despre propriul rol, numele colegilor de rele smile. Ei stiu, deci, cine e mafia si cine e cetatean cinstit, necunoscand insa care cetateni detin roluri speciale.

3. Moderator
Fiecare joc are nevoie de un moderator. Acesta este responsabil de distribuirea rolurilor, gestionarea jocului si asigurarea unei conduite conforme cu regulile a participantilor. Moderatorul nu participa la joc, el doar il arbitreaza.
4. Zi/Noapte
Jocul se desfasoara intr-o alternanta zi-noapte si incepe noaptea.
Prima noapte este una speciala, in care jucatorii cu roluri speciale nu isi pot folosi aceste roluri. Singurul obiectiv al acestei nopti este de a lasa mafia sa discute in privat si sa-si stabileasca, daca vor, desigur, o strategie comuna pentru ziua ce urmeaza.
In toate celelalte nopti, mafia alege un cetatean pe care il ucide. Discutiile intre mafioti se poarta in privat, ei trebuind sa decida intr-un interval oarecare de timp pe cine ataca.
De asemenea, noaptea e momentul in care jucatorii cu roluri speciale isi folosesc puterile pe care le au (investigative, protective, de atac, etc.), in scopul de a ajuta tabara de partea careia sunt sa castige.
Toate actiunile pe timp de noapte ale mafiei si ale jucatorilor cu roluri speciale se concretizeaza prin intermediul moderatorului.
Ziua discutiile se desfasoara liber, neexistand decat foarte putine restrictii. Daca noaptea e momentul in care mafia ucide cetateni, ziua e momentul in care cetatenii incearca sa gaseasca mafiotii ascunsi intre ei. Mafiotii, la randul lor, incearca sa para cetateni onesti, putand eventual conduce discutiile si suspiciunile pe piste false. Minciuna, disimulare, manipulare, orice e posibil ziua, insa de obicei mafiotii sunt cei care sunt nevoiti sa minta si sa se ascunda, cetatenii cinstiti avand toate motivele sa fie onesti si sa nu para mafioti in ochii celorlalti cetateni.
In fiecare zi, jucatorii ramasi in viata (inclusiv mafia) decid asupra unei persoane pe care o linseaza. Pentru ca cineva sa fie linsat, el trebuie sa fie votat pentru linsare de majoritatea jucatorilor in viata. Fiecare jucator are un vot, pe care il poate folosi cum vrea. Votul poate fi dat si retras de oricate ori, pentru orice jucator, mai putin pentru sine. In urma discutiilor voturile pot sa migreze de la un jucator la altul.
Cand un anume jucator aduna majoritatea voturilor curent exprimate asupra sa, el moare. In acel moment se termina ziua respectiva, urmand din nou noaptea.
Jucatorii morti, atat ziua cat si noaptea, ies definitiv din acel joc si nu mai pot participa la discutii.
5. Finalul jocului
Ziua si noaptea alterneaza pana cand una din tabere castiga jocul.
Cetatenii castiga cand toti mafiotii sunt morti.
Mafia castiga cand toti cetatenii sunt morti sau nimic nu mai poate impiedica acest lucru. De exemplu, cand la inceputul unei zile mafiotii si cetatenii sunt in numar egal, cetatenii nu mai pot ajunge la o majoritate pentru a linsa un mafiot, deci mafia castiga.
Cand o tabara castiga, toti membrii ei sunt considerati castigatori, fie ei in viata sau nu. Sacrificiul de sine e uneori necesar, important este ca la sfarsit tabara din care faci parte sa castige
