Vocabulator is a flashcard-style app to help you learn new words.
It is common for users to learn many words from a vocabulary app by remembering the example sentence and recalling its meaning from that context. Vocabulator takes this one step further by providing an image for each word that relates to its example sentence. This gives users an additional opportunity to learn words without requiring any extra time--particularly helpful for visual learners. Further, the same image is typically used for several words that are related to one another, helping to build associations between the words.
You can also review or learn words by doing Sentence Completion, where you fill in the blank with one of five choices. The sentences are taken from real books and are not contrived, so you will learn the words just as you would if you read lots of books--without reading all the sentences that don't have new words in them! Definitions of all of the choices are provided along with the correct answer. There are an average of 16 sentences per word, so it will be easier to learn the words than get used to all the example sentences--vocab learning doesn't have to be repetitive!
Words with a range of difficulty are included, so this can be used for general vocabulary-building, studying for the SATs (easy/medium words), or studying for the GREs (medium/difficult words). The focus, like when studying for an aptitude test, is on difficult words and lesser-known forms of more common words. Each word has a single, concise definition to make memorization easier.
You can also add new words. Since typing on a phone can be slow, we'll look up your new words online if you'd prefer not to type the details. It's our goal to make it easy to learn new words!
v1.1 has added new features in response to user feedback: a setting to turn off animations and make the process faster, a button to choose never to see a known word again, and more!
Please let us know any features you'd like added.
